Welcome to the 5th Grade
Special reminders for this week:
Monday 1/20 – There is no school in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Day
Thursday 1/23 – There is a 12:00 dismissal with after care. Parent and Teacher Conferences are being held in the gym from 1:00 – 3:00 and from 5:00 – 7:00.
The following are the projected lesson plans for the week of January 21st:
Grade 5 – Science
We will begin our third CELL, Work and Simple Machines. In this CELL we will look closer at some simple machines: wedge, levers, pulleys, axles, and inclined planes. We will determine how the use of simple machines changes both the direction and magnitude of our forces. We will see how simple machines make our lives easier and the work load to feel less. We will build apparatuses that demonstrate these principles.
Midterm Exam – 1/22
Thursday 1/23 – Graded homework for Work and Simple Machines due
Grade 6 – Science
We will begin our fifth CELL, Space. In this CELL we will look closely at our place in observable space and at the patterns that can be found within our galaxy. We will closely examine the rotation and revolution times of the planets within our solar system and dive deeper into stars, nebulae, black holes, and dark matter. We will observe the gravitational pull of a planet’s moons and how asteroids and meteors form and travel.
Midterm Exam – 1/24
Grade 7- Science
We will begin our fourth CELL, Cellular Organization. In this CELL, we will examine the smallest unit of organization within a living organism, the cell. We will look at organelles and their structures and functions. We will begin to understand the process of cell replication, including mitosis and meiosis. We will look at DNA and RNA replication and examine how amino acids bind together to form proteins essential to life.
Wednesday 1/22 – SDR investigation #2 in Cellular Organization due
Midterm Exam – 1/22
Grade 8- Science
We will begin our next CELL (core educational learning lab), Sound Waves and Pressure. In this CELL we will explore how sound travels in waves and how those waves create pressure on different mediums. We will investigate the speed of sound and how frequency determines pitch.
